Summary of Terrorist Incidents and CT Operations: June 2013

This month’s report covers terrorist incidents throughout the world, with special emphasis on events in the Middle East, and specifically in Iraq. According to the UN, 761 people were killed in militant attacks across Iraq in June – fewer than were killed in May 2013. The 10th of June was one of the worst days of the month, with 70 dead and 114 others injured in a series of attacks in central and northern Iraq. The majority of these attacks – car bombings, shootings and clashes – targeted security forces and police in Mosul, where 36 people were killed and 122 were wounded. June 2013 was also marked by terrorist incidents in Afghanistan Egypt, Indonesia, Syria, Somalia, Pakistan and Thailand.

This month’s report also covers counter-terrorist incidents throughout the world, with particular emphasis on events in the Middle East and Europe. Authorities foiled two terrorist plots, in Iraq and Germany, respectively, involving the abuse of toy airplanes to inflict death and destruction. On 1 June, Iraqi authorities arrested five Al-Qaeda-linked militants in Baghdad on suspicion of plotting to carry out poison gas attacks in the Middle East, Europe and North America using remote-controlled toy airplanes. On 25 June, German authorities dismantled a terrorist cell that intended to attack local sites using remote-controlled model airplanes filled with explosives. Although no official link has been made between the two plots, this new modus operandi constitutes a dangerous innovation in terrorism. June also saw counter-terrorist efforts in Denmark, France, Israel and the West Bank, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Somalia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and Yemen.
