Summary of Terrorist Incidents and CT Operations: April 2014

This month’s report covers terrorist incidents throughout the world, with special emphasis in Africa, specifically in Nigeria where, on April 15, approximately 276 female students were kidnapped from the Government Secondary School in the town of Chibok in Borno State. Boko Haram released a video (on May 12) showing 136 of the girls and claiming responsibility for the incident. April 2014 was also marked by terrorist incidents in Afghanistan, China, Egypt, India, Iraq, Israel and the West Bank, Libya, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia and Syria.

This month’s report also covers counter-terrorist incidents throughout the world, with particular emphasis on events in South America, specifically in Peru where, on April 10, security forces arrested 24 leaders of the political wing of the Shining Path rebel movement, MOVADEF, including the lawyer of its imprisoned leader and the cousin of President Ollanta Humala, in Lima and Puno (a southern region bordering Bolivia). The arrests were the culmination of a two-year investigation, which determined that members of the MOVADEF were responsible for terrorism and financing terrorism through drug trafficking. April 2014 was also marked by counter-terrorist incidents in Bahrain, India, Israel and the West Bank, Kenya, Lebanon, North America, Spain, Tunisia and Yemen.
