Atty. Stephen Landes

Stephen J. Landes is Of Counsel in the Litigation Department of the international law firm Locke Lord LLP and Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. Over the course of his 50-year career, Steve was primary outside counsel in the US for a major UK industrial company on a variety of matters including issues arising from significant acquisitions and divestitures. He counseled a broad range of companies on antitrust and trade regulations issues. Steve has handled a wide variety of complex commercial, bankruptcy, professional liability and product liability matters in both state and federal courts.

Steve is well known for his work on cutting edge cases, including as lead trial counsel in the first case brought on behalf of a U.S. citizen under the Anti-Terrorism Act against funders of international terrorism, resulting in a jury verdict of $156 million. The verdict was upheld in a precedent-setting en banc decision by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in December 2008. Boim v. Holy Land Foundation, 549 F.3d 685 (7th Cir. 2008). He is co-author of a chapter on private litigation against terrorism financing in a new ABA book, Countering the Financing of Terrorism.
